We celebrate "Télapó" or "Mikulás" (it means St. Michael-day) on this day. Children are given a lot of chocolate, mostly Santa Clause shaped chocos, and other sweets or small gifts. It is a pleasant way to start the winter, and a perfect starter for the Xmas! lol

King Little Michael ---- hungarian folk tale ----
hullohollotoll

Király Kis Miklós / King Little Michael

Once upon a time in a far away land there was a 77 year old poplar tree with 77 branches. On the 77th branch was a 77 year old skirt with 77 creases and in the 77th crease was a small 77 year old book. On the 77th page was the 77th story of which I want to tell you.

Once upon a time, in a far away land, lived a King with his three daughters. (Relax, there’s plenty of salt on the table.) Every morning they would all take a walk together in the forest. Once, a big, black cloud came upon them and spoke, “Hey you, King. Give me your oldest daughter, because if you don’t I’ll take away the sun.”

The King answered, “If you’re a good spirit, then come to us. If you’re a bad spirit, then leave at once!” The cloud went and took away the sun.

The next morning they went out to take another walk when again a black cloud came. “Hey King, give me your middle daughter because if you don’t I’ll take away the moon. The King didn’t give in and the cloud took away the moon.

The third morning the King and his daughters went out walking when once again a black cloud came. “Hey King, give me your youngest daughter or I’ll take away the stars.”

The King said, “If you’re a good spirit, then come down to us. If you’re a bad spirit, then leave at once.” The cloud went and took away the stars. Well, there was a great darkness and the people went about in a great darkness.

Once  King Little Michael (Király Kis Miklós) went with his little brother to the royal courtyard for some water. He told his little brother, “You know what Bro’, I’d bring back the sun, moon and the stars, if the King would give me his youngest daughter in marriage.”

The King heard him say this and called him over. “Nah son, if you can’t bring back the sun, moon and stars like you said then I’ll cut your head off.”

“Well your majesty, please give me a horse, a sword for the both of us and I’ll be on my way” said  King Little Michael. And off he went through several countries to a far away land until he reached a silver forest. He tied down his horse at the edge of the forest. His little brother stayed with the horse and made sure animals didn’t come to prey on it. Little King Michael went to the silver bridge and cut out one of the planks.

A seven headed dragon came that way and his horse tripped on the bridge. The seven headed dragon said, “Dogs should drink your blood. Seven years I have traveled on this bridge and you haven’t tripped once. What’s the reason today?”

The horse answered him, “Fire for me, water for you, we both need to be consumed.”

The seven headed dragon got off his horse and said, ” King Little Michael, come out from under the bridge for since you were nothing but as a piece of grass. I knew I was going to have to duel with you.”

As  King Little Michael came out the seven headed dragon asked him “And how shall we fight, hand to hand, by sword or by staff?”

King Little Michael answered him, “Dogs fight without weapons, herdsmen use staffs, the valiant fight by the sword.” So they fought each other by sword. And Michael was valiant and during the fight he cut off six of the dragon’s heads.

The seven headed dragon  spoke, ” King Little Michael, leave me this one head. I’ll give you the stars.”

King Little Michael said, “Nah, where are they?”

The seven headed dragon replied “Over there, under my saddle blanket.”

King Little Michael took out the stars and cut off the dragon’s seventh head as well. Then he went to his little brother, untied his horse and they went on.

They arrived at a gold forest where he tied his horse to a tree. He went to the gold bridge and cut out two planks from it and hid underneath the bridge. Then there came a 14 headed dragon and his horse tripped on the bridge. The dragon said, “For 14 years I have traveled on the bridge and you’re never tripped. What the reason today?”

The horse responded, “Fire for me, water for you, we both need to be consumed.”

The 14 headed dragon got off his horse and said, “Come out from under the bridge King Little Michael, for since you were as a piece of grass I knew I was going to have to duel with you.”

As  King Little Michael came out the dragon asked him, “How should we fight, hand to hand, by sword or by staff?”

King Little Michael said, “Dogs fight without weapons, herdsmen use staffs, but the valiant fight by the sword.” So they fought by sword.

As they were fighting King Li’l Michael cut off the thirteenth head, the dragon said to him, “King Little Michael, leave me this one head. I’ll give you the moon.”

The young man asked the dragon, “Nah, where is it?”

The dragon told him, “It’s under my saddle blanket.” Then King Li’l Michael took out the moon and cut off the dragon’s fourteenth head. He went back to his little brother without telling him that he had gotten the moon and they traveled on.

They then came upon a diamond forest. He tied up his horse, went to the diamond bridge, cut out three planks and hid. A 24 headed dragon came and his horse tripped on the bridge.

“What’s your problem today? I’m been traveling on this bridge for 24 years and you have never tripped on this bridge before” said the 24 headed dragon.

“Fire for me, water for you, we both need to be consumed” his horse replied.

The dragon got off his horse and said, “Come out from under the bridge King Little Michael, for since you were as a piece of grass I knew I was going to have to duel with you.”

As King Li’l Michael came out the dragon asked him, “How should we fight, hand to hand, by sword or by staff?”

King Li’l Michael said, “Dogs fight without weapons, herdsmen use staffs, but the valiant fight by the sword.” So they fought by sword.

As they were fighting King Li’l Michael cut off the twenty-third head, the dragon said to him, “King Little Michael, leave me this one head. I’ll give you the sun.”

The young man asked dragon, “Nah, where is it?”

“Over there, under my saddle blanket.” replied the dragon. Now this dragon had a three legged horse, but it could run faster than any four legged one. So King Li’l Michael didn’t take out the sun, but instead put the stars and the moon under the saddle blanket of the three legged horse. Then he cut the twenty-fourth head of the dragon, mounted the three legged horse and went to where his little brother was waiting.

“Nah, little brother, we have the sun, moon and the stars. We can go now” he said.

They went and when they reached the edge of the forest a little man on the top of a tree spoke to them. “King Little Michael, you think that the sun, moon and stars are yours?”

“Well, whose are they?” asked King Li’l Michael

“They’re mine” replied the little man. King Little Michael got a hold of himself and started to climb the tree to bring down the little man. About the time King Li’l Michael was half way up, the little man jumped on the three legged horse and rode away. So King Li’l Michael send his little brother home to tell the King what had happened and to continue the journey by himself.

King Little Michael set off and went and went until he was in another far away land where he found a man crying. “Hey Man” said King Li’l Michael, “Why are you crying?”

“Well, why wouldn’t I cry?” replied the man, “I’ve looked all across the world and there’s nothing new to see.”

“You come with me and you’ll find something new to see somehow”  King Li’l Michael said and they continued the journey together until they found another man crying.

“Why are you crying, Man?’ asked King Li’l Michael.

“Well, why wouldn’t I cry?” replied the man, “I’ve stepped great distances across the world and there is no new place to step towards.”

“You come with me and you’ll find a new place to step great distances” KingLi’l Michael said.

So they took off the three of them until they found yet another man crying. “Why are you crying, Man?’ asked  King Li’l Michael.

“Well, why wouldn’t I cry?” replied the man, “I have 7 cords of wood burning beside me, 7 sheepskin jackets on me as well as 7 fur coats and I’m still cold.”

“Come with me. You’ll find warmth somehow” King Li’l Michael said.

On they went until they arrived at the house where the little man lived. They went inside. An old woman, the little man’s wife, knew that they were looking for her husband. She gave them a place for the night, but she heated a room like a large kettle to the point where it would have burned them all up.

However, it didn’t bother the man who was always cold. He liked it. He was warm but all the others were about to bake. King Little Michael spoke up, “Hey, Frosty! Don’t let us burn. Do something!” Well, the man who was always cold just breathed out a sign once and immediately the room became cool again.

The next morning the old woman let them out of the room. King Little Michael said to the man who could see for far distances, “Look, can’t you see that little man with the little beard around somewhere?”

“Yes, he’s in the middle of the ocean on the top of a willow tree” said the man who could see for far distances.

King Little Michael said to the man who could step far distances. “Now step out for him.”

The man who could step long distances right away stepped out and twisted the little man’s beard in his hand and placed him in front of King Li’l Michael. King Little Michael took the sun, moon and stars away from him and immediately released the stars to shine in the heavens.

He then thanked the three men for their help and headed homeward. About halfway home he released the moon and then when he thought he was in close distance to home, he released the sun so that he could arrive home in daylight.

When he arrived home, the King gave him half his kingdom, his daughter in marriage and they had a large wedding feast.  And they still live happily today, if they haven’t died.

That Cat
hullohollotoll
Once upon a time there was a cat that couldn't be kind.

Other cats were petted and loved. They didn't steal or scratch or bite. They purred. And this cat wanted to be like them. But when someone came close to give her food or pet her, she hissed and her hair stood on end. She couldn't help it.

Long ago she had been a pet. A little boy had given her a name. One day, the little boy wondered if a cat was like a lizard. He cut off that cat's tail to see if it would grow back. When it didn't, the little boy got bored, and one day he dumped the cat in the weeds by the river.

She was all alone and hungry, and she had no name. She learned how to slip into people1s houses unseen, and she learned to steal food. People started calling her "That Cat".

That Cat began livig in a damp alley where people left their garbage and sad people slept. She crept out only at night.

Sometimes, when she felt lonesome, she would sit in a small clearing in the park, gaze up at the moon, and talk to it.

Sitting on a rock in the moonlight, she wuld ask, "Why am i so unlovable?" "Why does life hurt?" And she would look at the stub that used to be her tail.

One night the moon was so lovely and bright that she couldn't stop looking at it. She just sat and stared. She didn't even noticed a monk in long robes smiling down at her.

"Well what do you know, a cat talking to the moon!" he wispered.

Startle, That Cat dove under the shrubs, rom where she peeped out, her hair on end, ready to attack.

But the monk sat down on a bench some distance away and began opening the bag he carried. He took out a box that held the dinner he had been saving. Then he took out a piece of fish and set it on a large leaf.

That Cat raised her nose and sniffed. The food smelled good.

Then the monk began talking. "Some people say cats are demons. They say the Cat was banished from the Chinese zodiac because it refused to pay repect to the Buddha".

"But i've seen an old, old paining, " he said. "It showed the gods, demons, humans, and other creatures who came to say goodbye to the Buddha. And the cat was there, crying."

His voice was soothing. "Don't blame yourself, little one. You've shown so much courage already. Just do your best to be the cat you truely are", he said.

"You are a kind cat. I can see it", he said. Ten he got up and slowly walked from the clearing.

That Cat crept out from under the bushes and ate up all the fish. And she thought about what the monk had said.

She didn't feel like going back to th dank alley. So, her stomach full, she curled up under the shrubs, and soon she was fast asleep.

When she awoke, she felt refreshed. Slowly she streched each leg, and as she was trying what to do next, she heard someone walk into the clearing.

It was a boy. He sat down on a rock. He was all alone and crying.

That Cat watched as big tears fell silently, one after another... drop...drop...drop. For a long time she watched.

Then quietly, ever so quietly, That Cat came out from under the shrubs and crept towards the boy. Her heart was racing. eleven steps away. Then just six. Now two.

The boy looked up, feeling her warmth.
They looked at each other for a long, long time.

Then the boy smiled. And slowly, he put out his hand.
And when he touched her, she purred.

hullohollotoll
:P
Költözni akarok!!!!
Nagyon!!!
